Going to the theatre isn't quite the same as going to the movies or a concert. There are a couple of things to keep in mind as an audience member. Remember, the actors, director, and crew have all come together to put on a live show that everyone in the audience can enjoy.
Turn off your cellphone
During a theatre performance it might distract or derail the performance. The actors are working hard up on stage remembering lines, and creating a story. So make sure their epic monologue isn’t interrupted by your ring tone.
Don’t send text messages during the show
You might think you are being super sneaky, but from the stage, your phone light shining on your face is not only distracting, it makes you look spooky! Even if you think no one can see, they can.
Be on time
Unlike a movie, with most theatre you won’t be allowed to slip in through the door once the performance has begun. You’ll need to make sure you are there on time, and ready with your tickets 10 minutes before the show is scheduled to begin.
Don’t eat during the show
At the movies pop-corn, drinks, ice creams, and candy are all fair game. But when it comes to theatre, snacking ain’t cool. Chomping, slurping, and rustling wrappers are all pretty disruptive sounds for the actors and the audience when you’re all together in a pretty tight space. So make sure you eat before you come.
Shhhhh...
It’s fine to laugh, gasp, cry, smile, and clap and woo as loudly as you’d like. Theatre is all about reacting and being in the moment together. But unlike the movies, don’t whisper with your neighbours or ask questions during the performance. Wait until after to ask all those burning questions.
Stick to your seat
Everyone in the audience wants to enjoy the show, so make sure you respect their space. Don’t stick your feet on other people’s seats, and keep your bum in your seat. If you’re lucky enough to be in the front row, try not to stretch your legs out so far that they are on the stage or performance space.
